Object-oriented UX
As the son of immigrant parents, I've often felt like a man without a country. Not Korean enough to be Korean, not White enough to be American, I longed for acceptance and community. From this existential limbo, I've learned the importance of inclusivity, belonging, and compassion. These values are essential when advocating for users in user-centered design.
As a middle child, I was inadvertently assigned the role of famliy mediator. To be an efficacious mediator, one needs to be an active and engaged listener; an understanding of character and context is a must; finally, above all else, one needs to practice endless empathy. Coincidentally, these are the traits of an effective UX designer as well.
As a teacher of ESL for over 6 years, I've learned that wherever you're from, however old you are, and whatever you believe in, everyone has the same needs, motivations, and an inexplicable compulsion to check Instagram during class. Boiled down to our essence, we are one and the same.
